GET TO KNOW ME

Education & Training

I am a Minneapolis-based licensed psychologist offering in person therapy in Edina, MN and virtual therapy for adults in all 39 psypact states. I have been training in psychotherapy since 2015, earned my doctorate in combined clinical and counseling psychology at the University of California - Santa Barbara, completed my pre-doctoral residency at Northwestern University, and my post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Therapy Approach & Philosophy

I see therapy as a collaborative effort in which we work together to help you understand yourself more deeply and deal with life’s challenges more effectively. By exploring how you developed your current patterns of relating and coping, we can discover which strategies and styles are working well for you and where it is time to find new options. People often report that working together in this way helps them be more present with their feelings, authentic in their relationships, and confident that they can handle the inevitable ups and downs of life.

A Personal Note

I am a proud Midwesterner, born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My favorite poem is Wild Geese by Mary Oliver and my comfort meal is homemade pot pie. Outside of session, I’m likely biking by the river, reading a mystery novel, or catching a Twins game. I love being a therapist and feel honored to do this work.

  • Fees are $200 per new intake and $185 per standard session (45-60 minutes). Accepted payment methods include cash, checks, all major credit cards, and HSA cards.

For insurance, I accept Aetna and Aetna partner plans. For all others, I will happily provide a receipt for services that you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Learn more about seeing an out-of-network provider here.

  • My approach is integrative. This means I draw on a variety of theories and evidence based approaches - particularly psychodynamic, humanistic, and acceptance and commitment therapies - to respond to your unique needs and goals.

At the start of our work we will develop a shared understanding of where we are beginning, where we hope to go, and how the therapy may look to get there. Always, I strive to provide trauma-informed and culturally humble care.

  • Two of the most common reasons people seek therapy are to address symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. These symptoms can include struggling with your mood, thoughts, energy, appetite, sleep, focus, and relationship with yourself and others, which can make it extremely difficult to live your life fully. In therapy we work to both alleviate these symptoms and also address the patterns and roots of suffering to lead to lasting change.

In addition to treating anxiety and depression concerns, I specialize in helping people:

    - address emotional repression and develop emotional awareness

    - address self-criticism & perfectionism and develop self-compassion

    - address habitual people-pleasing and develop healthy boundaries and balance

    - address relationship concerns and develop relationship depth & connection

    - address attention struggles & procrastination and develop focus & achievement

    - address high performer & athlete challenges and develop peak performance

Research shows that the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor for successful therapy outcomes. I tend to be good fit for people who are curious about themselves and others, wanting therapy to feel like a team effort, and looking for lasting change.

  • Currently I only offer individual therapy for adults on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I am not able to see couples, families, children or adolescents, or adults needing sessions more often than once a week. I also do not provide forensic testing or engagement in legal disputes. Finally, there are some concerns that may be outside of my scope of expertise or which I can not treat without pre-established collaborations of care.

If you are unsure whether this might apply to you, please do not hesitate to reach out through my contact page or for a consultation. Even if I am not the right person to address your concerns, I may be able to a assist in finding referral options.

  • Sessions are typically 50 minutes weekly or every other week. Sessions are held either over secure video call or in-person in Edina, Minnesota. There is by now substantial research support for the effectiveness of tele-therapy, provided both people are comfortable with video calls in general.

During appointments, you can expect me to listen carefully to your story and concerns. I may reflect back what I am hearing from you, ask questions to help deepen our exploration, and offer challenges or alternative perspectives. At times I may provide information about psychological process, brainstorm ideas for action, or ask us to reflect on the therapy itself.

Therapy may be short-term or long-term, depending on your needs and our joint plan for your treatment. At the start of our work, we will clarify your goals and, from there, will together create a relationship that is unique to us and a therapy experience that is unique to you.

  • Each potential therapy relationship begins with a free 15-minute phone or video consultation. This is an opportunity to see if we might be a fit for therapy stylistically and logistically.

You can book a consultation directly through my secure website: meg-boyer.clientsecure.me

Or by sending me an email through my contact page if you have any initial questions.
